What brings me to work in an IT company despite being an architecture student?

When I talk about my background, everyone absolutely asks me why I’m belong to IT company although I was majored in architecture. Today, I’ll keep the reason on this journal. Let me explain.

As a result, I noticed that I prefer supporting the people who working in any company with IT technology to designing some buildings. When I was 3rd grade student in a university in Tokyo, I participated in an impressive internship which organized by a company provide “SketchUp”, a software is design tool most developers use to create a 3D model from a blueprint. During 2 months, I had to do much task like counter support, sales, new product tests and so on. Then, lots of people and companies who works in construction site and designs buildings or city environments needed the software and other soft/hardware to help them. In case of Japan, they are usually force to work for long hours because of old-school method and manual labor. So most construct companies need to apply to new technology or method for solving the problem. This is the reason why people and companies need it. Finally, I figured out 2 things: there are much demands not only construction but also other business world and I also want to support them with the technology. And, I gave up joining a construction company and studied IT technology.

After that, I couldn’t write a graduation thesis without a topic about architecture/city environments so I wrote the thesis about “Improvement of Deep Learning model to predict recovery time of earthquake-induced damage”. I forcibly connected my major to IT technology. It was a little bit hard because I had to study over from the basics.

建築・土木学科出身なのに。

私の経歴を話すと「なぜ建築学科なのにIT企業に所属しているのですか」と必ず聞かれます。今日はその理由を綴っていこうと思います。

結論、建築デザインよりも、IT技術を駆使して企業で働く人たちをサポートする方が好きだということに気づいたからです。大学3年生の時、「SketchUp」という設計図から3Dモデルを作成するソフトを提供している会社が主催するインターンシップに参加したのがきっかけでした。2ヶ月間、カウンターサポート、営業、新製品のテストなど、様々な仕事をさせていただきました。そのとき、建設現場やビル/都市環境を設計する多くの人々や企業が、ソフトウェアやその他のソフト/ハードウェアを必要としていました。日本の場合、昔ながらの手作業や古い手法が原因で長時間労働を強いられることが多いため、多くの建設会社ではソフトウェアやハードウェアを導入する必要があります。インターンシップを終えて最終的に、私はこう思ったのです。「建設業だけでなく、他のビジネスの世界でもそれらについて多くの需要があり、私も技術で彼らをサポートしたい」そして、建設会社を辞め、IT技術を学びました。

その後、建築・都市環境に関するテーマでないと卒業論文が書けないので、「地震による被害の復旧時間予測のためのDeep Learningモデルの改良」というテーマで卒論を書きました。無理やり専攻分野とIT技術を結びつけました。基礎から勉強し直さなければならないので、ちょっと大変でした。
